Nutritional Therapy is an holistic healing approach based on the ancient belief that food (as nature intended) provides the medicine we need to obtain and maintain a state of health. This application of nutrition science promotes optimum health, peak performance and disease prevention throughout life.
Many of us are now beginning to understand the crucial role that food plays in our lives and how our modern, often busy and stressful, lifestyles are dictating what, how and when we eat, this ultimately influencing how we feel.
Your Nutritional Therapist will aim to uncover the root causes of any present symptoms, help you to address them and support your body towards normal function, assist in the prevention of illness and promote a state of optimum health and wellbeing.
A personalised treatment programme is devised encompassing both dietary and lifestyle advice, with recommendations and information. Recommendations may include guidance on natural detoxification, methods to promote intestinal and colon health, the avoidance of toxins and allergens and where necessary guidance on the appropriate use of supplementary nutrients and other natural products.
A variety of functional and biochemical tests are available to validate recommended dietary plans - these often assist in the fine-tuning of your nutritional programme.
"Our diets can determine many elements of our long-term health and resistance to ill health and disease"
How well we feel and how well we function depends on how efficiently each cell in our bodies is working. Our bodies are composed entirely from molecules derived from food. Countless elements like hormones, enzymes, blood cells, antibodies, etc. are needed for health - nutrients in food are vital for their production. For our bodies to be working at their optimum we need to absorb the correct balance of water, vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, proteins and fats.
These and many more health problems can be addressed.
"Nutrition remains the easiest and most effective way of maintaining health - WE ARE WHAT WE EAT"
From babies to the elderly and infirm (with medical supervision where appropriate). A personalised nutrition service from a nutritional therapist may help alleviate a wide variety of symptoms and may assist in the recovery from many situations of ill health.
Nutritional Therapy is not intended to replace appropriate medical intervention. Always discuss problems with your GP. Liz is happy to talk to any medical practitioner about Nutritional Therapy with the consent of the client.
A personalised nutrition service from a nutritional therapist can help alleviate a wide variety of symptoms and assist in the recovery from many situations of ill health. The most common complaints associated with sub-optimal performance, that may be helped by nutritional therapy include:-
Nutritional Therapists often work with patients, many of whom have been referred by medical practitioners, who have chronic health problems that conventional medicine finds difficult to treat.
Increasingly, parents with an overweight child and/or a child with learning and behaviour difficulties seek to support their child with nutritional therapy as opposed to prescription medications.
"Diet affects our energy levels and mood"
However, why wait to use Nutritional Therapy when you are ill - prevention is much better than cure.
Health is the most precious gift so why not learn how diet and lifestyle can help you achieve optimum levels of energy, vitality, longevity and zest for life.
To give you the best possible advice, Liz will need an understanding of how your body is working so she can endeavour to find out what has gone wrong and the reasons why.
So, prior to your initial consultation you will be asked to complete and return a detailed Nutritional Assessment Questionnaire with sections on your symptoms, lifestyle, diet and hereditary profile, together with a short food diary.
Consultations are informal, relaxed and friendly with the first session lasting 1-1.5 hours. During this time the likely underlying causes of your health concerns will be discussed and Liz will explain how diet may be influencing your health. Relevant laboratory tests may also be considered as these can assist in the fine-tuning your nutritional therapy programme.
Realistic dietary and supplement recommendations are discussed and possibly lifestyle changes too. A tailored nutritional programme is then developed to meet your personal requirements. Liz works at a pace acceptable to each patient taking individual lifestyle factors into consideration. Practical advice on food choices, shopping and cooking is given so any changes can be easily implemented.
Follow-up consultations, usually lasting about 45 minutes, are arranged to assess your progress, making adjustments to your programme where necessary. During these sessions any residual or new symptoms can be focused on.
Following each consultation you will receive a written report often including fact and information sheets on health conditions, foods, menu plans and recipes.
Accompanied shopping trips can be organised if the client desires.
Many people see a Nutritional Therapist 2-3 times but it is still possible to benefit from just one consultation.
A range of biochemical tests are available to validate recommended dietary plans – these often assist in the fine-tuning of your nutritional programme.
Test kits can be obtained directly from a reputable laboratory. The test kits can be used at home, requiring samples from either saliva, urine, stools or a pin prick of blood.
